Compliance and Data Security: Seemingly No End to Lurking Problems That Threaten Businesses

By Dick Weisinger

It’s a tendency of human nature not to worry about problem prevention until after a problem hits, and by that time it’s too late.

Ben DiPietro, reporter at the Wall Street Journal, recently collected the results of a number of surveys about compliance, data protection, and disaster recovery.  The sad overall summary of the data is that few businesses are fully prepared to be able to withstand security or disaster incidents.

  • NTT Communications found that half of businesses don’t have a document business continuity and disaster recovery plan, and of those that do, less than a quarter have ever tried to test that plan.
  • Menlo Security found that about a quarter of web sites are built with software that has known security vulnerabilities.
  • The International Chamber of Commerce found that intermediaries in the supply chain are a weak link and aren’t proactively stopping the counterfeiting and pirating of goods.
  • Allianz Global reported deep concern within the shipping industry about potential cyber attacks that could cripple a port or terminal.
  • Redspin estimates that 8.9 million health records were breached in 2014 with 164 incidents, a 25 percent increase over 2013.
  • CipherCloud found that two thirds of mid-sized and Fortune 500 companies  say that getting audit, compliance and privacy under control is their biggest cloud computing challenge
