Containers: Is it Madness or a Stroke of Vision at this Point to Leave Behind the World of Installers?

By Dick Weisinger

Applications are migrating to containers.
One vendor example is Alfresco, maker of ECM and Digital Transformation software.  Alfresco’s next product release is currently planned to be only on Docker containers.
Alfresco’s approach could be early-adopter madness or visionary, a sort of radical decision like in 1998 when Steve Jobs released the iMac with no floppy drive or when Apple dropped the headphone jack with the iPhone7.

A recent survey by Cloud Foundary Foundation supports the idea that interest in containers is running high. The survey found that IT decision makers now look to the cloud first for solutions and 72 percent are evaluating containers.  Especially when a new application is being rolled out, containers are becoming the preferred approach.

Abby Kearns, Executive Director, Cloud Foundry Foundation, said that “as IT Decision Makers settle into their cloud journey, they are more broadly deploying a combination of available platforms, including PaaS, containers and serverless.”
