Data Management: There is Still a Lot of Room for Improvement

While data may be “the new oil” for the economy, many businesses haven woken up to that reality yet. A study by IDC found that 68 percent of business data is never leveraged in any way.

Dave Mosley, Seagate CEO, said that “winning businesses must have strong mass data operations. The value that a company derives from data directly affects its success.”

Reasons why businesses often don’t fully utilize their data include:

  • unclear of how to make the data usable
  • problems with managing and storing the data
  • data isn’t saved
  • data isn’t secured
  • data is siloed and not easily accessible

Data management is important to organizations because it can increase productivity, minimize security risks, minimize data loss, enable regulatory compliance, and improve data quality.
