Databases: Cloud DBs Rule

By Dick Weisinger

The cloud has reshaped and reinvigorated the database market. Oracle, long the market leader in Databases, is seeing its grip on the market slowly slip. The database market is transitioning from being the engine found in enterprise IT datacenters to the servers found in the top cloud vendors. Gartner estimates that cloud database revenues will exceed revenues from on-premise software for the first time in 2022. Global public cloud end-user spending is expected to reach nearly $500 billion in 2022.

As old-time database market leaders like Oracle and IBM slowly drop from the top, they are being replaced by cloud vendors Microsoft, AWS and Google Cloud. Garner expects cloud vendors to dominate the database market in the coming years, gradually choking off smaller vendors.

Sid Nag, research vice-president at Gartner, said that “IT leaders who view the cloud as an enabler rather than an end state will be most successful in their digital transformational journeys. The organisations combining cloud with other adjacent, emerging technologies will fare even better.”
