Digital Transformation: Digital Dexterity, Network Technologies and Opening of New Digital Markets

By Dick Weisinger

Organization that want to be successful in digital transformation need to refine three characteristics: digital dexterity, adopt network effect technologies, develop an industrialized digital platform, according to Gartner.

Digital Dexterity – Organizations need to develop a culture that encourages their people to develop the right skills. Tina Nunno, vice president and Gartner Fellow, said that “to scale, we need people with digital dexterity. People who are collaborative, agile, analytical, innovative and creative. People who have both the ability and the desire to exploit existing and emerging technologies for better business outcomes.”

Network Effect Technologies – The top three technologies that can help organizations grow exponentially are the Internet of Things (IoT), use of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Leigh McMullen, managing vice president at Gartner, said that “value emerges slowly, and then it accelerates quickly as more participants are added to the ecosystem and new APIs are discovered and used. That is the network effect.”

Industrialize the Digital Platform – Industrialization will allow new digital market places to be created. Nunno said that “the beauty of the industrialized digital platform is that it enables you to create value in all directions at scale: up, across and out. Value creation used to be one directional: from the organization to customers. Now value creation can scale in all directions, from anyone, anywhere.”
