Digital Transformation: The Widening Gap Between Haves and Have Nots

By Dick Weisinger

Digital Transformation (written as ‘DX’ by IDC) is the use of digital technologies to improve all aspects and processes of a business.

Richard Warley, managing directory at CenturyLink, said that “in a global business economy dominated by disruption, innovation and cyber threats, speed to market is of the essence… Moving to a superior network and employing agile cloud technologies are foundational elements to simplifying the transformation process.”

A study by IDC finds that most companies recognize the need to transform their businesses, but many run into roadblacks or “digital impasses.”  59 percent of businesses are stuck at stage two or three maturity according to IDC.  (IDC defines five stages for the maturity model: ad hoc, opportunistic, repeatable, managed, and optimized.)

Shawn Fitzgerald, IDC research director, said that “while we are seeing more companies becoming more digitally capable, there is a widening gap between leaders and laggards, with significant implications for those organizations that cannot make the transition to a digital-native organization.”
