Disruption: 7 Technologies that will Change Everything
“The single largest challenge facing enterprises and technology providers today is digital disruption. The virtual nature of digital disruptions makes them much more difficult to deal with than past technology-triggered disruptions,” said Gartner’s Daryl Plummer.
Plummer said that “disruption doesn’t stop. It stays disruptive until something else disrupts it. We have to be willful about acting on it. If you wait for disruption to happen, you’re going to get pushed aside.”
Plummer’s list of top disruptive technologies on the horizon are as follows:
- Quantum Computing – Compared ti conventional computers, quantum computers will be able to do things like “detect cancer faster and help us design new drugs.”
- Swarm Intelligence – They are like bees. “They are aware, they are autonomous of each other, but act together. They’re resilient so if one fails, another will take up the slack. These systems act in solidarity and can expand.”
- Real-time Language Translation – Simultaneous interpretation by computers will “enable people to be more effective communicators in foreign arenas because language will be easier to understand.”
- Nanotechnology – “Nanotechnology will be everywhere. We could have organic 3D printing that can build a scaffolding to grow organs so they don’t get rejected.”
- Human-Machine Interface – “When the machines can ready our mind, we have to block that ability so they can’t take those things from our heads.”
- Software Marketplaces – “We’ll get ‘try before you buy’ for software like you do with shoes. You then don’t have to deal with all the licensing plans and can have an App Store for everything you’d ever want to do with software.”
- Smartphone Disintermediation – Alternative devices to smartphones are around the corner. “A million new IoT devices are coming online every hour of every day. It could reinvent markets by 2023 and disrupt the smartphone as the center of everything.”
