Document Capture: Turning Paper Documents into Searchable Data

By Dick Weisinger

Despite the rise of electronic documents, paper and paper-based processes in businesses are still common. Document capture, the scanning of paper documents into electronically viewable images, can bring paper documents into electronic workflows.  Why is that important?

There are many benefits that come from the scan and capture of paper documents.  Additional benefits are also possible when OCR text-recognition techniques are applied to read all or specified areas of the scanned documents.  The benefits of document capture and OCR include:

  • Quicker retrieval and search for information
  • Easier to incorporate and track scanned electronic documents in workflows than paper documents
  • Reduction of physical storage space
  • Easier Sharing and Collaboration
  • Easier to secure and protect digitized information
  • Easier to meet compliance requirements

Document capture products, like Ephesoft, are designed to capture and recognize content from paper documents and upload that data into data and document repositories, like Alfresco.
