ECM: A Standard to Rally Around
The public draft version of the Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) became available for public comment in October. The overseeing body for the creation of the standard is OASIS and the public comment period runs through December 22nd.
As a standard within the document and content management community, it is receiving unprecedented support. The standard is seeing good support from vendors as diverse as IBM, Microsoft, EMC, Oracle, Open Text, Alfresco and SAP. Many of these companies are already offering prototypes and beta implementations of the standard. Alfresco has offered the REST CMIS API to their repository for nearly one year. But most CMIS vendors are expected to wait to see how the standard stands up to public comment. Most CMIS products aren’t expected to be out until mid-2010 or later.
CMIS exposes content as a service, and CMIS isn’t about centralized data management. It recognizes that content systems were built to address solutions and that trying to create a centralized system that can effectively manage all kinds of content and in all kinds of environments is hard. And that may be part of the reason why so many vendors are rallying around it. In the world of content management one size does not fit all. Each content system has a different set of strengths, and it is rare that companies can come anywhere close to standardizing on a single system.
