ECM: Email By The Numbers

By Dick Weisinger

Life with email as we know it cannot continue. Email usage is accelerating and is taking a toll on business productivity.

The Radicati Group published some interesting statistics about corporate email overload:
The world has two billion email users, and corporate email users, on average, receive 126 emails everyday and spend about 41 percent of their day reading and responding to emails.

Email overload is reaching a point where it is becoming more of a distraction than a business productivity tool. Email often serves as the communication link that drives business processes, but overflowing email in-boxes is making it hard to cut through the clutter and prioritize the incoming messages.

ECM, Email Archiving, and Records Management products all offer solutions for how to search historical emails and content, but the problem of how to streamline the flow of data to individual workers remains. The ultimate solution will involve a change to existing business process and the creation of new types of collaborative tools.
