ECM: Salesforce.com takes on SaaS ECM

By Dick Weisinger

“Products like Documentum and SharePoint have failed,” said Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce.com. Benioff’s plan for “content management as a service” is to mix ECM and SaaS with a little Web 2.0 to come up with an on-Demand service that works a lot more like YouTube than Documentum.

The new content management capabilities are planned in the Winter ’08 release of Salesforce.com coming out in the fourth quarter. Salesforce is targeting the management of unstructured data. People will be able to do searches that include criteria like ‘most comments’, ‘most popular’, and ‘most recently viewed’.

It sounds pretty light-weight, but Salesforce is targeting small and medium sized companies may not need the feature-rich capabilities of more traditional ECM software.

Benioff went on to say that Salesforce has no plans now to get into the on-Demand Office productivity suite contest with companies like Google and Zoho — “no spreadsheets, word processors or email”, he said.
