Edge Computing: Powerful Devices, Real Time Computing, and High Levels of Connectivity will Drive Decentralization
With the rise of Cloud Computing one might guess that the future of enterprise data is centralization within the cloud. But analysts think that just the opposite will happen. Enterprise data will instead become more decentralized, driven by high levels of connectivity from the Internet of Things (IoT).
Decentralized Edge (or Fog) computing is expected to become increasingly prevalent. In fact, Gartner goes so far as to say that “the edge will eat the cloud.” Grand View Research predicts that edge computing will reach $3.24 billion by 2025, growing at a rate faster than 40 percent compounded annual growth.
Santhosh Rao, principal research analyst at Gartner, said that “organizations that have embarked on a digital business journey have realized that a more decentralized approach is required to address digital business infrastructure requirements. As the volume and velocity of data increases, so too does the inefficiency of streaming all this information to a cloud or data center for processing.”
