eDiscovery: Businesses Outsource eDiscovery Operations
The discovery phase of litigation is typically about 15 to 20 percent of the total cost of a litigation case. Currently the eDiscovery market is about $1 billion. And a report by AlixPartners found that 22 percent of all litigation cases involve eDiscovery.
A survey by bluesource, eDiscovery and archiving vendor, found that:
- 87 percent feel unprepared for taking on eDiscovery
- Only 31 percent include social media content in their eDiscovery/legal hold process
One conclusion of the Bluesource report is that more companies are opting to use cloud-based managed archiving and eDiscovery tools. Matthew Edwards, President & CEO of bluesource, said that “Many IT organizations value the cost savings cloud infrastructure provides but widely publicized outages make jumping in with both feet risky. Companies will seek the value of cloud offerings to enhance their eDiscovery capabilities with the security of dedicated, control environments. The result will be a significant growth in managed service implementation models.”
Daniel Lim, Vice President at Guidance Software, wrote that “leveraging cloud-based eDiscovery tools, especially for review and production, can boost the security and accessibility of data. When integrated with on-premise tools for collection, processing, analysis and early case assessment, this hybrid combination appears to deliver a best-of-breed solution that could be called ‘eDiscovery done right’.”
