Enterprise Apps: Why Users Have Had Enough of Enterprise Software

By Dick Weisinger

Enterprise apps have long had an image of being secure and more sophisticated than what was available for consumer use.  But this image has changed dramatically over the last five to ten years.  Enterprise users now yearn for business apps that give them the kind of features commonly found and available in the free consumer applications that they use.

A survey by ScaleArc of more than 500 IT decision makers found that 78 percent of them thought that consumer apps were more advanced compared to business apps and now set the standard for what business apps should strive to be.  81 percent said that consumer apps were more reliable and more performant.

The reasons why users prefer consumer apps over existing business ones include:

  • better user interfaces (54 percent)
  • less sluggish (32 percent)
  • had less downtime (31 percent)

Justin Barney, president and CEO of ScaleArc, said that “it is clear that consumer grade is the new enterprise grade.  Even IT decision makers who build enterprise apps recognize that they, and the general public, have a better experience on their personal apps than their work apps. We’ve all lost patience with websites and apps that don’t offer optimal performance.”
