Enterprise Search: A Restricted Open Source Search Option Emerges
Lucene and Lucene Solr are well-known Open Source developer tools that are widely embedded in many products. Both tools are created by the company Lucid Imagaingation. Lucid Imagination has now announced a new product called LucidWorks Enterprise that is built on top of Lucene/Solr that targets the Enterprise Search market.
In much the same way that Open Source Alfresco bundles large numbers of open source software components, LucidWorks Enterprise not only is a higher-level interface to Solr, it also bundles 90 other open source components, including Aperture, Zookeeper and Tika. Features of LucidWorks include faceted navigation, auto-suggest, spellcheck, and Lucid Imagination’s new SolrCloud. The Admin UI is designed to allow rapid configuration and setup. A REST API is provided to allow extensions and integrations to be developed. Other features include relevancy scoring, smart defaults, built-in data acquisition, multiple collections, document and role-based security. Marketing for LucidWorks boasts of sub-second response times even when querying under heavy loads across many billions of documents.
The advantage of LucidWorks over just plain Solr is that the product targets end users rather than developers. It is pre-configured to ingest documents and start productively working immediately after installing it. It also includes pre-defined data connectors so that many different document types can be read and properly indexed.
It sounds great, but unfortunately it’s not free. LucidWorks is released in a restrictive flavor of Open Source. It is freely downloadable for development, test integration, demo and instructional use, but if you intend to use it in production, you must sign up for a support subscription. Annual cost of the subscription is $36,000.
