Enterprise Software: Emergence of Sustainability Management Software

By Dick Weisinger

ESG – Environmental, Social, and Governance. ESG has become an increasing buzzword and driver for how businesses present themselves, make decisions, and grow their business.

There has been a strong focus in the tech industry on the ‘E’ of ESG — energy sustainability. How do hardware and software compute cycles minimize their impact on the environment?

For example, the software might be written more efficiently to reduce compute cycles and energy usage. Lower energy consumption rates might be possible with serverless or container deployment technologies rather than with VMs or physical machines. Environmentally sustainable hardware might be achieved by using recycled and renewable materials, deploying machines that are highly energy efficient and using packaging that limits the amount of waste created.

But equally important as environmental sustainability are social and governance sustainability issues.

In order to promote and monitor sustainability in the workplace, a niche area of software known as the Sustainability Management Software Market has gradually been developing.

Bjoern Stengel, an analyst at IDC, said that “environmental issues like decarbonization have traditionally topped the list as sustainability priorities for many organizations. However, over the past few years, the impact that the pandemic has had on the workforce has raised the level of emphasis by organizations on social sustainability issues such as employee health, safety, and wellbeing.”
