Enterprise Software: Market Driven by Modernization and Move to Cloud

By Dick Weisinger

Global enterprise Software is on target to grow 7.5 percent, reaching $150 billion by the end of the year.  By 2019, the market will grow to more than $200 billion in revenues, according to a market forecast from Gartner.

Businesses are spending money to modernize their software, typically replacing legacy on-premise software with cloud-based SaaS.  Gartner expects 60 percent of businesses to be using the cloud by 2020.  And as businesses move to the cloud and SaaS, they are often transition from traditional on-premise licenses to subscription-based models.

Bianca Granetto, research director at Gartner, said that”from a revenue growth perspective, the widespread move from on-premise to cloud office will disrupt the traditional revenue flow as more organisations pay smaller increments over a longer period of time.”

Most of the Gartner report isn’t too surprising, except their prediction about “Build” versus “Buy” decisions for digital business applications.  The trend lately had seemed that businesses are moving from on-premise software loaded with lots of expensive customizations instead to a model of using highly-configurable cloud-based solutions.  Gartner says though that businesses are increasingly using combining application components to create unique solutions, often using software from startups and ‘disruptors’.  75 percent of digital business applications will be “build” by 2020.
