Health Care: NHIT Begin Path to Health Information Exchange
As part of the push by the Obama administration towards a Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIT), we’re seeing activity on a number of fronts. NHIN is a set of standards, services and policies that will enable Health Information Exchange (HIE). The goal is for physicians, hospitals and laboratories to all be better able to exchange health information with each other.
We reported over the last week how both CCHIT and Drummond Group have now been authorized as EHR test certification bodies. Now the federal health IT advisory panel has set up a Health IT Policy Committee governance work group to study and make recommendations on topics like security, data integrity, and identity management as it relates to the exchange of health records.
The governance work group has been meeting this week to gather information about best-practice “rules of the road” for managing sensitive data. To that end, they have invited members from banking and other industries that have extensive experience with data security to make recommendations to the health IT policy group. Formal policy rules around governance are expected to start being announced early next year.
