Hi-Res 3D Printing: Printing Curved, Flexible Electronic Circuits

Miniature 3D Printers.  That’s what researchers from South Korea have recently created.  The new technique operates at room temperature enables the printing of tiny intricate structures like arched bridges, pillars, and zig-zag shapes.  The process works with a variety of materials like textile, fiber, plastics and metals.

In particular, the new technology is useful for printing electronic circuits.  3D printers to date have been limited in the printing of circuits because printers could only print at a low resolution; patterns thinner than 0.01 mm were not possible.  There have also been limitations on the metals that could be used by printers because the metals used for creating circuits needed to be heated to very high temperatures.  The new technology is able to print as thin as 0.01 mm.

Park Jang-ung, lead researcher on the project, said that “the existing ultrafine pattern production methods in semiconductor manufacturing procedure had difficulties in reproducing 3D patterns. But the new technology can realize it in high resolution.  Our 3D e-jet printing technology will provide a new paradigm in the research field of 3D printing as well as wearable device since it can produce ultra-fine 3D patterns which have been hardly achieved with current 3D printing approaches”.
