Hydrogen Energy: A Zero Carbon Emission Goal by 2050
“Net Zero” is a an environmental goal to keep the CO2 gas in the atmosphere balanced. The net difference of all greenhouse gases emitted and the C02 gases removed from the atmosphere needs to balance out to zero. An even more ambitious goal is “Zero Emissions” which means that no gases are emitted in the first place, so there is no need to remove anything to put the CO2 back into balance.
Scientist have identified greenhouse gases in the atmosphere as the most likely cause of accelerated climate change that we have witnessed over the last several years, and many fear that the effect on climate change may become even more severe in the near future.
Jennifer Granholm, US Department of Energy Secretary, announced a program called ‘Energy Earthshots’ in July 2021. “The Energy Earthshots are an all-hands-on-deck call for innovation, collaboration and acceleration of our clean energy economy by tackling the toughest remaining barriers to quickly deploy emerging clean energy technologies at scale. First up: Hydrogen Shot, which sets an ambitious yet achievable cost target to accelerate innovations and spur demand of clean hydrogen. Clean hydrogen is a game changer. It will help decarbonize high-polluting heavy-duty and industrial sectors, while delivering good-paying clean energy jobs and realizing a net-zero economy by 2050.
Bernard Looney, CEO at BP, said that “we have got to change, and change profoundly, because the world is changing fast, and so are society’s expectations of us. But it is more than having to change. We want to change.”
Mahieddine Emziane, researcher at University of Strathclyde Glasgow, said that “reaching Net Zero globally by midcentury is challenging but feasible if all the conditions are met. We are starting our journey and we need to accelerate the pace of our energy transition. H2 technologies will definitely help in this process, given that H2 is a versatile energy carrier that can be used to both generate and store energy.”
