Internet of Things (IoT): Federal Government Spending $9 Billion on IoT

By Dick Weisinger

The Internet of Things (IoT) market of sensors and on-line devices is growing fast.  One player in the IoT market that you might not expect is the Federal government.  According to a new report by analyst firm Govini, the federal government spent nearly $9 billion on IoT technology in 2015, a 20 percent increase from the previous year.  Within the government, the agency which spends the most on IoT is the US Department of Defense (DoD).

How is the government using IoT?  The DoD, for example, purchases large numbers of sensors used for threat detection and communications in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Sensors are being deployed in a way that deploys sensors to help save the lives of soldiers.  Matt Hummer, director at Govini, said that “for the DOD and its mission, the opportunity cost is high.”

IoT categories include infrastructure, software and security and devices.  The biggest growth in federal spending is in the area of sensors and data collectors which saw a 55.9 percent increase over the previous year.  The top three categories of federal spending are software applications, endpoint defenses, and sensors and data collectors.
