Internet of Things (IoT): One-Fifth of Companies Already Involved with IoT

By Dick Weisinger

Almost one-fifth of 3000+ global businesses surveyed by Forrester say that they’ve already adopted some form of IoT products or services.  Businesses are hoping to gain an edge over others by being early IoT adopters.

Forrester overviewed the technology, saying that “IoT solutions help companies bridge the physical and digital worlds, ingesting information and context through sensors from the physical world into the digital, and taking actions in the physical world via actuators based on digital insights.”

A parallel Forrester report commissioned by Microsoft identifies a few industries where IoT is already having an impact:

  • Asset Management
    • Fleet Management – managing the location and usage of vehicle fleets
    • Industrial Asset Management – managing the location and usage of equipment and machinery
  • Operations Management
    • Supply Chain Management – managing supply chain relationships
    • Energy Management – monitoring and managing usages of water, electricity, gas and other utilities
  • End User/Citizen Use Cases
    • Security and Surveillance – monitoring of facilities and spaces for public safety
    • Smart Products – connecting with consumer products and added intelligence

“Businesses are hoping to gain an edge over others by being early IoT adopters.” Good point, Dick. I think that edge will come into play with the idea that it is something new for the consumers, and we like to try new alternatives. I’m just a little bit skeptical with IoT’s security aspect right now, what do you think?
