IT Operations: Adoption of Internet of Things Drives Investment in ITOM

By Dick Weisinger

IT operations management (ITOM) is the management of the day-to-day activities related to the operation of an organization’s IT infrastructure components and applications, including on-premises data centers, private cloud deployments, and public cloud resources.

Gartner predicts that adoption of new technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) will drive large investment in ITOM through 2010.

Additionally, Gartner is predicting a shift from traditional ITOM vendors that sell on-premise software to cloud vendors like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS).  As customers move to the cloud a shift to cloud management services is natural and also means that infrastructure and services can be handled with the same vendor.

Matthew Cheung, research director at Gartner, said that “customer demand has driven traditional software vendors to transform and adapt to the changing technology and competitive landscapes. Competitive pressure from cloud (SaaS offerings) and commercial OSS (offerings with a free license plus paid support) is forcing ITOM providers to move toward subscription-based business models for both cloud and on-premises deployments. This shift will eliminate revenue growth spikes as the large upfront investment seen in traditional models is spread out over time in a repeatable revenue stream.”
