Mobile Data Traffic: Gartner Expects 52 Million Terabytes to Be Transmitted Over Mobile in 2015

By Dick Weisinger

The popularity of mobile devices is driving a dramatic surge in the amount of data traffic that originates from mobile devices.  In 2015 alone, mobile data transmissions have increased by 59 percent from the previous year to 52 million terabytes.  Gartner estimates that global mobile traffic will continue and is on track to triple by 2018.  Part of the driver behind the surge are mobile users who are switching from 2G to 3G and 4G cellular platforms.  Fast mobile data connections are expected to increase from 3.8 billion this year to 5.1 billion in 2018.

Video streaming is a key factor to the increase in data volumes.  Surprisingly there is little split it the usage of video streaming by both young and older users.  In the US, 40 percent of 18 to 24 year olds stream video for more than 15 minutes per session.  Interestingly, older users tend to stream even more; 47 percent of 45 to 54 year olds stream more than 15 minutes per session.

The Gartner report found that video usage is expected to rise from 50 percent of total mobile data usage in 2015 to more than 60 percent by 2018.
