Open Source: Enterprises Favor an Open Source Cloud Stack

By Dick Weisinger

OpenStack is a software cloud stack that provides a packaged do-it-yourself (DIY) cloud service platform for hosting providers.  Rackspace Hosting and NASA started the Apache-licensed Open Source project in July 2010.  The goal for the OpenStack project is to make it easy for any organization to set up cloud computing services that will run on standard hardware.  Members of the OpenStack project now include Citrix Systems, Dell, AMD, Intel, Canonical, SUSE Linux, HP, and Cisco.

OpenStack competes with and is the Open Source alternative to VMWare’s vCloud offering.  vSphere/vCloud has tried to leverage its success in the virtualization market with its cloud offering.  vCloud provides a platform that is suitable for private, hybrid and public cloud solutions.  Prior to OpenStack, other than vCloud there were few options for enterprise customers looking to roll their own cloud solutions.

OpenStack has been out for about a year now, and a new survey from ZenOSS, a cloud management company, shows that it’s getting traction.   Bill Karpovich, CEO of Zenoss, said that “OpenStack’s growth over the past year is a testament to the power of open.  As a supporter of the project from its early days, we are excited to see it have such a big impact. We’ll continue to support the OpenStack project and aim to provide its users with the most complete monitoring and analysis solution available.”

Some of the findings of the ZenOSS report on OpenStack are:

Not surprisingly, those organizations that rated their comfort level high with Open Source were more prone to use OpenStack compared to VMWare/vCloud.

  • The more networked devices an organization has, the more likely that organization is to be considering creation of an internal private cloud
  • Similarly, the more networked devices an organization had, the more important open source is to them.  60 percent of 20,000+ device organizations favor Open Source, compared with 40 percent of 1000 device organizations.
  • VMWare and OpenStack are roughly tied currently in the cloud platform software space.  Together they represent about 80 percent of the market
  • The two most important characteristics of a cloud are high availability and good performance
