Oracle: 11g is coming! — July 11th
After more than three years, Oracle will begin shipping a new major version of its flagship database product, version 11g. With ‘g’ still standing for ‘grid computing’. That’s on target with an average of about 3.2 years between previous major Oracle version updates since version 6.
The release date will be July 11th for version 11.
Some of the anticipated features expected in the version 11g release include:
- high availability
- performance
- scalability
- manageability
- compressed storage that can shrink data stores by two thirds
- partitioning capabilities
- some level of unstructured data storage
Great features, but the release is not without its critics. For example, while Oracle will add new security features like the Oracle Audit Vault and Virtual Private Databases, the critics say that these security features mask the fact that there are some basic security issues that haven’t been addressed — things like buffer overflows, and these are the vulnerabilities that allow systems to be hacked.
