Oracle: 11g on the Starting Line

By Dick Weisinger

Version 11g of Oracle’s Relational Database is here and packed with new features.  That is as long as you’re running on Linux.  Windows and UNIX flavors of the database haven’t yet been released.  Those releases are expected to be available before the end of the year and possibly at the Oracle OpenWorld show in November.

Some cool new options of the the 11g release include:

Active Data Guard —  Processor intensive operations like backups and selects can be offloaded to a standby database
Advanced Compression — Data can be compressed to half or a third of the normal size that it would occupy
Total Recall — Keeps a record of data that changes for use in business intelligence or compliance audits

There are new features in the area of security, data protection and disaster recovery.
Also there are features for better storage and information life-cycle management.
