Oracle: What is Oracle Fusion 11g?

By Dick Weisinger

Oracle has been talking about it for years and it is now finally released:  Oracle Fusion 11g.  The name fusion comes from Oracle’s goal to meld together the best parts from Oracle’s many software acquisitions (58 so far).

What is the Oracle Fusion 11g release all about?
Really it is just an update to five of its middleware products:

  • SOA Suite
  • WebLogic Suite
  • WebCenter Suite
  • Identity Management
  • Oracle Development Tools for Fusion Middleware

The Middleware release centers on the WebLogic Suite as a platform and the SOA Suite provides the base for achieving interoperability across many applications and services.  Oracle is calling Fusion a ‘convergence layer’ that can be used to integrate service components.
The highlights of the release include the following, as reported on silicon.com:

  • Oracle WebCenter for building social networking services
  • Oracle Composer for customizing web sites via a browser
  • Oracle Real Application Clusters and Enterprise Grid Messaging for improved reliability
  • ActiveCache for improved scalability
  • Oracle Identity Management offers a universal federation framework
  • Updates to standard Oracle development tools like JDeveloper, Oracle Application Development Framework and Oracle TopLink

Unlike vendors like Microsoft, Oracle has tried to build products based on well-accepted standards without trying to hijack the standards in the process of doing that.

Oracle is trying to provide a single stack, from Database and Middleware, all the way up to the application layer.  Oracle presents a compelling set of software, but many analysts warn that buying into a single stack of technology and relying totally on a single vendor may ultimately lead to problems.
