PLM: Spanning All Areas of the Enterprise
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems have always been used in manufacturing companies, but PLM is moving from the engineering back rooms to touch all parts of the manufacturing organization. PLM systems are creating centralized hubs of product information available to the entire organization.
A recent report by the Aberdeen group called Integrating the PLM Ecosystem surveys how ‘Best-In-Class’ organizations use PLM and how PLM positively affect their businesses.
Jim Brown of the Aberdeen Groups said that “based on our research, industry leaders are integrating business processes and product data across the multiple product development, data management, design, and analysis applications that make up the extended Product Lifecycle Management suite. PLM integration improves efficiency, helping companies meet product launch dates and revenue targets.”
- The survey found that Best-In_Class companies use PLM to centralize their product information and use PLM systems as the primary “system of record” for that data.
- Best-In-Class companies use a ‘multi-dimensional’ approach to integrating PLM with external systems. Rather than sticking with a single approach, integration approaches are selected on case-by-case bases. “It is not necessarily the approach to integration that currently sets apart the Best-in-Class from others, but the integration itself.
- The integration technologies that companies have selected for integrating PLM include Services Oriented Architectures (SOA), Product Information Management (PIM), Master Data Management, and Master Data Management (MDM).
