Records Management: Lawyers Aren't Walking the Talk

By Dick Weisinger

Lawyers often advise their clients of the importance of having a solid records management policy in place to avoid the high costs of litigation.  In fact, 77 percent of lawyers view RM as something that companies need to jump on.  Yet 49 percent of lawyers find that their own internal legal practice records management policies are deficient.

Organizations that have in-house lawyers seem to be a bit more active.  Corporate lawyers are attempting to prepare their companies for possible legal actions.  26 percent of corporate lawyers are doing analyses to determine how prepared their organization is for addressing a discovery inquiry.  26 percent of organizations have created an eDiscovery team, and 14 percent of organizations are reaching out to specialty law firms and outside vendors to help in the implementation of their eDiscovery practice.
