SaaS: Sun's Vision for the Clouds
With the backdrop of Oracle’s likely acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Sun’s James Gosling recently commented on technology and a variety of Sun’s initiatives.
Gosling said that Sun has been planning a SaaS strategy for some time. Not too unexpectedly, Sun’s SaaS architecture is structured around Java and the Java APIs.
Gosling said that Sun’s SaaS platform would “look similar to EC2 but it will feature higher level services. EC2 is mostly raw storage, raw compute power. Ours will also provide higher level facilities. For example the new version of OpenOffice understands the concept of cloud storage, so you can start to store a tree of documents to the cloud, instead of on your own storage arrays.”
Gosling also had comments around SOA. He thinks that SOA is the right path for enterprise software development, and he said that “Object oriented programming is SOA. SOA is OO in the large, and it’s a very sensible way to design systems.”
Gosling also said that he thought that agile style of development was superior to the traditional waterfall approach to development, but the tools for managing agile just aren’t there yet.
