Security: Only a Quarter of Businesses Are Able To Identify a Data Breach

By Dick Weisinger

Only one quarter of businesses in the UK recently said that they’d be able to identify a data breach of their computer systems according to a recent survey  by the Ponemon Institute, sponsored by Informatica.  Although half of organizations say that they do know that they’ve been hit by a data breach over the last year.

Businesses said that they thought the tools that could best help them improve their compliance and security are as follows:

  • 74 percent – Real-time monitoring
  • 74 percent – Policy workflow automation
  • 69 percent – Automated data discovery/risk assessment

Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, said that “as the gap between believing in data security intelligence solutions and actually possessing them diminishes, so inevitably will the risk of data breaches.  Given the growing business and societal costs of breaches, and the runaway proliferation of sensitive data, organizations need to seriously consider adopting a data-centric security stance without delay. To do otherwise may soon be construed as negligence.”
