SOA and BPM: Technology Blends to Fuel Next-Generation Applications
Everyone is suddenly talking BPM and SOA. In September Oracle beefed up its Oracle Business Process Analysis Suite with SOA. Microsoft announced SOA plans with a code-named product called ‘Oslo’ and intends to meld SOA and BPM capabilities into its BizTalk Server. The OMG is offering workshops on how to combine SOA and BPM technologies. Tibco, Computer Associates and others are all in the act.
Forrester thinks that the combination of SOA and BPM makes good sense. They urge architects to consider adopting SOA-based BPM tools.
Forrester goes so far as to start talking about something they’re calling “Dynamic Business Applications”, an area that comprises SOA principles and technologies blended with “3B technology”: Business Process Automation (BPM), Business Intelligence (BI), and Business Rules. And if that’s not enough, they go on to throw in concepts like Agile development, Web 2.0, Social networking, and AJAX. Each of the technologies viewed separately have attracted great interest and following, but when combined, Forrester contends, Dynamic Business Applications can create something so compelling and next generation, that it is much more than just the sum of the individual pieces.
“Applications that use all of the several design ideas and technologies associated with Dynamic Business Applications can provide much more productive experiences for businesspeople, make breakthroughs in the automation of decisions and business processes, and provide the points of flex that businesses need. Our applications don’t do this today. Our businesses need them to.” says the Forrester report.
