SOA: Dead or Alive?

By Dick Weisinger

Burton Group’s Anne Thomas Manes declared SOA dead in January, and since then analysts have been in a heated debate.  The debate continued publicly recently at the SD West Conference in Santa Clara, California.  The conference included a session called “Is SOA Dead”.

Panelists overall didn’t have positive words for the current state of SOA.  Panelists referred to SOA as a construct that was created in CIO offices that turned into a buzzword.  Vendors picked up on SOA as a buzzword and tried to present their software in the SOA mold.  People began viewing SOA as a silver bullet, and unfulfilled the high expectations ultimately led to its demise.  Now that the appeal of SOA is tarnished fewer vendors are using it as a sales buzzword.

Panelists also commented on the complexity of WS-* standards for web services and the move now to REST web services.
