SOA: IBM Sees Need for T-Shaped Skills

By Dick Weisinger

IBM continues to warn of a Skills Shortage in SOA. Last fall an IBM-sponsored ZapThink survey found that more than half the companies surveyed had less than 25 percent of the skills needed to build out SOA-based enterprise solutions.

In a newer IBM-sponsored survey, similar results are found:

  • 56% respondents say a lack of SOA skills is “the #1 Inhibitor” to launching and delivering SOA projects with strong business impact
  • 80% of respondents will invest to increase SOA skills in their company this year
  • More than 60% of corporate executives invested in SOA-targeted retraining for both IT and Business staffs in the past year

One of IBM’s recommendations for filling the gap is to create staff members that are trained as ‘T-Professionals’. T-Professionals are bridge players that coordinate between IT and Business. Professionals with ‘T-Shaped’ skills are trained to see the big-picture and can help companies attack their problems with an end-to-end process perspective.

The T-Professional helps companies in these areas:

  • Foundational – Helps companies create the basis for business agility
  • End-To-End – Know how to coordinate across multiple business units
  • Transformation – Can capture innovation and creativity to bring about change
  • Dynamic Adoption – Respond to Changing Business Conditions
