SOA: Integration Tool of Choice
Most users of SOA think the best thing about SOA are its integration capabilities. AmberPoint, an SOA governance software vendor, surveyed 300 IT professionals that were well versed in SOA technologies. Users cited the following benefits for SOA:
- 74.9% found SOA provides the right infrastructure to integrate various system
- 47.5% said SOA helps pull together information from islands of data
- 45.5% said SOA helps reduce application development cycle time
- 32.8% said that SOA helps lower the costs of application development
And the top two benefits are really all about integration.
More than 90% of the SOA deployments, SOA solutions were created that involve non-Web Service or non-SOA components that include the following:
- Mainframe: 47.0%
- Packaged Application (SAP, Oracle, etc.): 68.1%
- Non-SOAP Messaging (MQ, RMI, etc.) : 58.9%
Perhaps the most surprising numbers released from the study were the around the success rates of SOA projects:
- 38% rated their SOA experience as fully successful, achieving all desired goals.
- 60.3% rated their experience as positive and at least partially successful
- Only 1.5% rated their SOA experience as not achieving the stated goals.
That’s a somewhat astounding success or partial success rate of 98.3% for SOA projects among a population of 300+ IT profressionals. One might question the techniques of the survey to have wound up with such positive numbers.
Or, just maybe the SOA hype is at least not completely all hot air…
