SOA: REST Services Are Up in SOA Round Two

By Dick Weisinger

First generation SOA had a strong technology focus and front-and-center in that focus was SOAP-based Web Services.  But there’s been a backlash on SOAP and an effort to swing towards simplicity.  And because REST Web Services are proving that they can be more nimbly built and deployed than SOAP ones, they’re getting a lot of attention.

But…  the question has been, do REST web services have a place in the enterprise?  Can they replace SOAP services in an SOA framework?  One interesting sign in the affirmative is the appearance of formal REST-based SOA patterns.

* Alternative Format
* Entity Linking
* Layered Redirect
* Transport Caching
* Uniform Contract

REST is significantly simpler than the SOAP approach.  Hopefully adding formal trappings around REST won’t bury its simplicity.
