Storage: Sales Spike as Demand to Keep up with Data Growth Soars

By Dick Weisinger

One sure signal that huge amounts of data are being collected is the growth that’s being seen in the storage market.  IDC reports that revenues in the storage market increased by 34 percent to $13 billion during Q1 2018.  The biggest growth of all was sales of storage to “hyperscale” data centers, an area which saw more than 80 percent annual growth.

Eric Sheppard, vice president at IDC, said that “this was a quarter of exceptional growth that can be attributed to multiple factors. Demand for public cloud resources and a global enterprise infrastructure refresh were two important drivers of new enterprise storage investments around the world. Solutions most commonly sought after in today’s enterprise storage systems are those that help drive new levels of datacenter efficiency, operational simplicity, and comprehensive support for next generation workloads.”

Among brands, Dell and HP Enterprise dominate storage sales.  But data centers are bypassing those brands and using Original Design Manufacturers, and that segment of sales is taking off.
