Storage: Storage Market Continues Rapid Growth

An IDC report shows the Storage market continued to be hot in 2006Q3.  Fueling the growth, the report cites four factors:

  • Consolidation of Data because of server virtualization
  • Branch office consolidation
  • Trend of organizations to retain more information, such as for Regulatory Compliance

The storage market has had 14 consecutive quarters of year-over-year growth.  783 petabytes of storage were shipped, up over 50% from what was shipped one year ago.  The total market grew 9.9% to $4.3 billion.  Ovedall there was an increase in average system size and price for systems in the $50,000 – $300,000 range. 

HP is the leading vendor, followed by IBM, EMC, Dell and Hitachi.
