The Enterprise IT Revolution: Demise of Enterprise IT?
Enterprise IT as we know it today will be a thing of the past within ten years time. That’s the forecast by analysts at ZapThink. They’re calling the current situation a ‘crisis point’. While most IT managers can see that changes are happening everywhere around them and with rapid speed, they also tend to be in denial that the changes will have a major impact on their way of doing business. Jason Bloomberg of ZapThink said that “today’s CIOs are aware of individual forces of change impacting their organizations, but they don’t have sufficient breadth of vision to see how many trends interact.” Ronald Schmeltzer of ZapThink said that if CIOs don’t have a strong rudder to steer their IT policies and practices through the upcoming storms that they could very well end up being “dashed on the rocks.”
The five ‘supertrends’ that ZapThink’s points to as being behind all this change for Enterprise IT are:
- The Global Cubicle – Communication technology increasingly lets people interact at the personal level with anyone in the world as if they ‘were in the same cubicle’.
- Democratization of Technology – The barrier to acquiring and configuring technology solutions is shrinking, minimizing the need for a specialized IT group
- Location Independence – It no longer matters where technology components are physically located
- Deep Interoperability – It’s becoming easier for different technologies to be able to interconnect
- Complex System Engineering – Technology is more frequently baking in properties, like enabling business agility, requiring less customizations
The first three of these points are clearly being realized already today, while the last two are long-held technology problems that may not happen as quickly as ZapThink predicts.
