Technology: Windows is Losing Enterprise Market Share to Linux
Linux is now the most favored OS for enterprise servers by a wide margin. As new servers are being deployed, Linux servers are the preferred replacement for Windows and UNIX servers. A report from the Linux Foundation based on a survey of nearly 2000 organizations found the following sentiment:
- 79.4 percent say they will add more Linux servers within the next five years
- 41.2 percent of organizations plus to add more Windows servers, but 43.6 percent will be either reducing or continue to just maintain their existing Windows servers.
- 70.3 percent of those moving to the cloud say that Linux is their preferred OS for hosting cloud applications
- 60.2 percent say that they will be using Linux for mission-critical applications over the next 12 months
- 86.5 percent report that the quality of Linux is continuing to improve
- 58.4 percent say that their CIOs see Linux as a more strategic platform than it was 3 years ago
The caveat here is that those polled for this survey were those organizations already known by the Linux Foundation and thus already had some interest or bias relative to Linux. Surveying a random cross section of organizations may have produced a more accurate representation. But the trend towards Linux does seem like a real one.
