Technology: WebRTC's One Billion Device Reach
WebRTC is a framework for real-time communication (RTC) between browsers that requires no special plug-in to work. This is a topic that we first covered last December. Supporters of WebRTC include Google and Mozilla — WebRTC is available now in both Firefox and Chrome beta for Android. Google WebRTC lead engineer Justin Uberti announced at the Google I/O event in May that as many as one billion devices are already in the field and enabled for WebRTC.
The benefits of WebRTC are that it enables browser-based applications like video chat, voice calling, peer-to-peer file sharing, remote training, machine-to-machine communications, and content braodcasting. It has the potential for businesses to save money on their telecommunications. For developers, browser implementation of WebRTC is as simple as just five or six lines of Javascript and HTML code.
Doug Michaelides, managing director, Macadamian Technologies, said that “our opinion is that WebRTC will be a major revolution in the way that Web software and mobile applications are developed because it enables real-time interactions in a way that’s never been possible before.”
Tsahi Levent-Levi is the Director of Business Solutions at Amdocs, writes for noJitter that “WebRTC is the most disruptive technology in VoIP to date. Not because there’s new technology in it, but because it enables new use cases to be implemented. It does this not only because it runs in the browser–it does this mainly because it targets web developers (10-100 times the number than VoIP developers out there) and it does this because it lowers the barrier of entry to players, which enables a larger set of use cases to see the light of day.”
