The Metaverse: From Hype to Industrial Revolution

By Dick Weisinger

While the consumer-focused metaverse hype has subsided since its peak in 2021-2022, the concept continues to evolve, particularly in the industrial sector. The industrial metaverse, a convergence of physical and digital realms in manufacturing and engineering, is gaining significant traction and investment.

According to market projections, the global industrial metaverse market is poised for substantial growth from 2025 to 2035. This growth is driven by increasing demand for efficiency, remote work trends, and the need for sustainable manufacturing practices. The industrial metaverse leverages technologies such as extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), 5G networking, and digital twins to create immersive and intelligent industrial environments.

Companies like Siemens are at the forefront of this transformation. At CES 2025, Siemens showcased its journey into the industrial metaverse, demonstrating how it’s collaborating with startups to foster innovation. The industrial metaverse enables virtual product design, remote collaboration, predictive maintenance, worker training, and optimized production processes.

The applications span various sectors, including automotive, aerospace, energy, healthcare, and construction. For instance, Siemens and Sony have partnered to deliver “breakthrough immersive engineering for the industrial metaverse,” enhancing visualization and collaboration in industrial design and manufacturing processes.

While the consumer metaverse faces challenges, the industrial metaverse is seen as a more practical and immediate application of the technology. The applications of the industrial metaverse span a wide range of secto driving significant improvements in operational efficiency, product quality, and worker safety.

While the consumer metaverse may have lost some of its initial luster, the industrial metaverse is rapidly gaining momentum. As this technology continues to mature, we can expect to see transformative changes in how industries design, manufacture, and maintain products, potentially revolutionizing the global industrial landscape in the coming decade.
