Unified Data Management: A Game Changer in the Data World, But What is it?

By Dick Weisinger

Unified Data Management (UDM) is an approach that consolidates disparate data sources under one common umbrella, typically a single data storage solution. It promotes good data management practices, such as data standardization, and is designed to create a clear singular view of customer profiles.

UDM differs from other data management products in several ways. Unlike content management, which deals with unstructured data, UDM consolidates structured data into a single source. In contrast to master data management (MDM), which focuses on managing core business entities, UDM encompasses all data sources. While metadata management deals with managing data about data, UDM provides a unified view of all data. Compared to enterprise content management (ECM), which aims to accomplish operational goals through a single centralized platform, UDM integrates all data sources into one common framework.

The term ‘unified’ in UDM refers to the removal of siloed data. By integrating data across systems, UDM eliminates data silos, providing a holistic view of performance and the ability to spot trends, risks, and opportunities with clarity.

Is UDM worth the hype? Accelerated cloud adoption continues to enable enormous innovation across data management technologies. Companies are increasingly adopting UDM to navigate the intricate data landscape as a guiding framework for sorting and structuring data effectively. For example, a company with a large sales, marketing, and customer success organization can use UDM to combine these sources under one data storage solution to best enable the team to gain insights.

As for future improvements, UDM is expected to evolve from a retrospective approach to a proactive one. This requires data managers to incorporate more critical thinking into their roles, anticipating and adapting a data management strategy depending on the type of data being collected.

UDM is a powerful tool that offers a unified, comprehensive view of all data, breaking down silos and enabling more informed decision-making.
