Virtualization and Security: Spending on Security Grows as Servers Migrate to the Cloud

By Dick Weisinger

While there has been huge interest and growth in the areas of both cloud computing and virtualization, the enabling technology for cloud computing, the security of these new technologies remains a major concern.  So, it comes as no big surprise that spending on security for cloud and virtualization technology is a rapidly growing field.

Managed Security Services (MSS), the outsourcing of network security services to a service provider, is one area that is particularly seeing growth.  A report by Infonetics found that spending on MSS increased by 12 percent in 2010 and the spend rate is expected to grow by 62 percent over the next five years, reaching $17 billion annual spending by 2015.  The report notes that much of this growth is attributed to security as related to the cloud, SaaS and virtualization technologies.

Specific factors that are driving growth in Managed Security Services include:

  • Increasing number of security threads
  • Complexity in implementing security solutions
  • Need to be able to address security across many devices, platforms and applications

By 2015, more than half of MSS spending will be related to cloud and SaaS operations.  Much of that expected growth is directly related to the speed with which SaaS and cloud activities are being adopted.  The Infonetic report estimates that the cloud and SaaS market is growing at a rate of 23 percent per year.
