The European Commission  recently released a draft of a set of guidelines that are aimed at reducing costs and increasing trust in cloud computing vendors.  The report describes details of requirements for vendors on service availability, the quality of support, security levels and data management.

The set of guidelines were drafted by the Cloud Select Industry Group (CSIG).  Participants in this group include cloud vendors like Atos, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, SAP, IBM, Salesforce, Cisco, HP, Accenture, Intel and EMC, and also legal experts like DLA Piper.

Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Justice, said that “more trust means more revenue for companies in Europe’s digital single market.”

Neelie Kroes, European Commission vice-president, said that “this is the first time cloud suppliers have agreed on common guidelines for service level agreements.  I think small businesses in particular will benefit from having these guidelines at hand when searching for cloud services.”
