Cloud Computing: For SMEs, Other Technologies are more Important than the Cloud

By Dick Weisinger

Which technologies matter most for small and medium companies today?

A survey by Oxford Economics, sponsored by SAP, determined the top five.  While the technologies that made the list are in themselves not surprising, the relative rankings may be.
The survey asked businesses which technologies do they currently employ today and found the following:
  • 47.9 percent – Business Management Software
  • 45.9 percent – Mobile
  • 44.0 percent – Business Analytics
  • 41.6 percent – Social Media
  • 35.2 percent – Cloud Computing
The report points out that SMEs have had a relatively ‘tepid’ rate of adoption of the cloud.  In drilling down to determine the reasons for a lagging adoption rate, the report notes the following concerns:
  • 38 percent say that the cloud is not yet secure enough for them
  • 35 percent say that they don’t fully understand what benefits the technology will bring them
  • 34 percent say that they don’t have the skills to implement cloud solutions
  • 31 percent say that without being able to calculate a ROI, they’re wary of the technology
  • 19 percent say that they don’t want to give up control over their IT systems
