Extended Reality: The Hot Topic of 2020

By Dick Weisinger

Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality immerse users in visual environments with artificial components. Virtual Reality is a totally computer-generated synthetic world. Augmented reality superimposes images over visuals of the real world around us. Other simpler tools include 360° video which lets users spin the viewport of an image to change the content and perspective of what they’re viewing. All of these technologies are now being lumped into a new category called X-Reality (XR).

Below is a Venn diagram from Pixvana that shows the relationships of these different technologies.

One thing that is certain is that these technologies are all moving fairly quickly and investment in research and startups is booming. The VisualCapitalist estimates that XR will grow to be a $209 billion business over the next four years. Forbes calls XR the ‘hot topic of 2020‘.

Rori Duboff, head of content innovation at Accenture Interactive, told Forbes that “we see the world in a one-dimensional way now – what’s in front of us. But once we start having these XR technologies, the world around us becomes much more complicated.”

Extended reality is indeed one of the most buzzing topics discussed globally by all Media platforms, yet its horizons are very narrow in the national market as compared to the international market. So if the purpose of this technological development could be explained with providing Major use cases of XR(Extended Reality) then its could be more transparent for users to increase their knowledge and also increase the level of confidence in investing in a particular industry, be it Heath, Education, Manufacturing, Retail, etc.
