Storage: Effective Management of Unstructured Data is Mission Critical
Yet another survey is released that again is showing data points that confirm the fact that many, if not most companies, are experiencing great pain in coming to grips with managing huge amounts of data. These are the results of a survey taken by Autovirt during the Fall 2009 Storage Networking World show.
Much of the problem is related to lack of resources and budget to address the problem. Some of the survey respondents indicated that the economic slowdown during late 2008 and 2009 caused IT departments to contend with drastically reduced budgets, and the management of unstructured data has taken the back seat to IT maintenance priorities.
The survey found that:
* 72% have IT environments where more than half of the data being managed is unstructured
* 91% termed their processes around the management of unstructured data as “Antiquated” or “In a State of Transition”
* 55% are planning to increase the priority of data lifecycle management projects in 2010
Noemi Greyzdorf, Research Manager, Storage Software, for IDC said that “The old days of one-NAS-fits-all are gone. Organizations will adopt the right solution for each problem, but instead of deploying islands of solutions throughout the enterprise, IT will seek to create storage pools with predefined capacity, protection, and performance parameters, and offer storage services based on this platform to various users within the enterprise. The gains achieved through this approach include economies of scale, lower operating complexity
and cost, and greater flexibility and accountability for resources being consumed.”
