Technology: 2010 by the Numbers
IDC Chief Research Analyst John Gantz summed up his view for 2010 by predicting that the worst of the economic downturn is over and that 2010 looks to continue the recovery seen in the last nine months of 2009.
“It’s going to be a better year. The probability of disaster is still there but it’s lower than it was last year. But like I tell my analysts: each year there’s a high probability of a low probability event taking place. Remember that.”
Gantz offered some interesting data and opinions about what the IT market might expect in 2010:
To put things in perspective, technology and IT are not standing still. Driving the market are facts like:
- The internet will cross the 1 billion user mark
- The number of servers in the Enterprise will double
- There will be 700 million social network users
- There will be 500,000 mobile phone applications
- The number of mobile phone users will triple
- 470 million 3G phones will ship — up 97 percent from 2009
- 160,000 4G phones will ship
- Information available to technology users will increase by 5.1 times
- $70 billion dollars will be spent on Internet advertising in 2010
- The number of interactions per day by users with applications and technology platforms will increase by 8.4
Between 2010 and 2013, the US will spend about $159 billion on new IT initiatives, and $184 billion will be spent in Asia, excluding Japan.
